Waihong Environmental Services Limited was fined $30,000 at Eastern Magistrates' Court today (July 13) for violation of Occupational Safety and Health Ordinance. The prosecution was launched by the Labour Department.
The case involved a fatal accident on September 15 last year inside a private estate at Broadwood Road. A worker fell 15 metres to his death when he was cleaning the sill of a wall opening.
According to 6(1), 6(2)(a), 6(2)(c) of the Occupational Safety and Health Ordinance, the employer must provide and maintain plant and system of work that are, so far as reasonably practicable, safe and without risks to health; and shall provide such information, instruction, training and supervision as may be necessary to ensure, so far as reasonably practicable, the safety and health at work of the employee. Any employer who fails to do so is liable to a fine of $200,000 and to imprisonment for six months.
