The Kwun Tong Community Centre officially re-opened today (June 13) upon completion of improvement works and serves as an ideal venue for district performances and events for the local community.

The Director of Home Affairs, Mrs Pamela Tan, officiated at the Kwun Tong Community Centre re-opening ceremony. Accompanied by Kwun Tong District Council Chairman Mr Chan Chung-bun, District Officer (Kwun Tong) Miss Pauline Wong, District Facilities Management Committee Chairman Mr Poon Chun-yuen and District Works Task Force Chairman Mr Fung Kam-chiu, Mrs Tan unveiled a plaque to commemorate the centre's reopening. A celebratory performance of Cantonese opera was staged in the hall right after the ceremony.

In her speech, Mrs Tan praised this district minor works project, which was funded by the Kwun Tong District Council. The centre's upgraded facilities could better meet the demand for a venue to hold various performances and events in the community. She said, "Upgrading of the Kwun Tong Community Centre can enhance district arts development and help create a more harmonious community as more performances and events will be held for local residents."

Mr Chan said, "Kwun Tong District Council understands the strong local demand for a performing venue. The council has worked closely with relevant government departments to speed up this district minor works project. The community centre will surely become more popular upon the completion of improvement works."

The improvement works starting from October last year include expansion of the hall and its stage, upgrading of audio and lighting equipment, renovation of the air-conditioning system and building of a new garden. The upgraded centre is now equipped with a 450-seat multi-functional hall, which is suitable for holding concerts, dramas, dance performances, talks and film shows, as well as dressing rooms, two function rooms and a garden.

Kwun Tong Community Centre, located at the town centre with convenient transportation, is a popular venue for community events and performances. The centre was built in 1959, and has been serving the community since its management was taken up by the Home Affairs Department in 1986. In view of the centre's worn-out condition, the Kwun Tong District Council decided to deploy funds to carry out the improvement works.
