Air Pollution Control (Specified Processes) Regulation amended

     The Government published today (June 5) in the Gazette an amendment regulation to allow registered professional engineers in the environmental discipline to undertake licence application and associated preparation works for major stationary air pollution sources.

     The new legislation - the Air Pollution Control (Specified Processes) (Amendment) Regulation ¡V adds registered professional engineer in the environmental engineering discipline under the Engineers Registration Ordinance (Cap. 409) to the definition of "qualified engineer" under Regulation 2 of the Air Pollution Control (Specified Processes) Regulations.

     "It will enable adequately trained and experienced engineers in environmental protection and pollution control registered in the said discipline to offer professional services in devising sound environmental management solutions for licence application under the principal regulations," a spokesman of the Environmental Protection Department said.

     "The amendment aims to tap the expertise and experience of registered professional environmental engineers who would help bring effective solutions in dealing with emissions from existing and new stationary sources with high air pollution potential," he added.

     The amendment regulation will be tabled on Wednesday (June 10) at the Legislative Council for negative vetting.  Subject to agreement from the Legislative Council, it will take effect from October 1, 2009.
