The Reading Fair 2009, which aims to promote learning from reading among students and share good practices among schools, was held today (April 25).

More than 2,100 students, parents, teachers, principals and participants of Hong Kong Education City's Reading Ambassador and Reading Contract Project attended the event, which was jointly organised by the Education Bureau, the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research and Hong Kong Education City.

Speaking at the Reading Fair 2009 ceremony, the Under Secretary for Education, Mr Kenneth Chen, noted that the Government had put in a lot of resources and the education sector had made great efforts to promote reading among students, with brilliant results.

To sustain the development of students' reading ability which will lead to life-long learning, we need to continue to strengthen language education and nurture good reading ability and habits; promote reading across the curriculum to achieve "learning from reading"; and enhance home-school co-operation to enlist parents' help in promoting reading, Mr Chen said.

Today's fair comprised two parts. The first part fostered professional sharing among teachers and principals. It included two keynote speeches by Prof Chan Shui-duen of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Dr Cecilia Chun Ka-wai of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and more than 40 parallel sessions during which 44 primary and secondary schools shared their good practices in promoting reading around the themes of "Reading across the Curriculum", "Learning to Read" and "Promoting a Whole-school Reading Culture."

The second part was "World Book Day Carnival", which featured school reading clubs, book talks, a book exhibition, a book exchange corner, etc.

The fair was held at the Yan Chai Hospital Wong Wha San Secondary School in Tseung Kwan O.
