Proprietor and director fined for violation of safety rule

     Lee Tat Interior Design Co. Ltd. and a director of the company were fined $14,000 each at Sha Tin Magistrates' Court today (April 21) for violation of the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance. The prosecution was launched by the Labour Department.

     The case involved a fatal accident which occurred in June last year at a workplace in Tai Po. A worker fell to his death from a metal tower scaffold while carrying out painting work.

     According to section 6A(2)(a) of the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance, the proprietor must provide and maintain a system of work that is, so far as is reasonable, practicable, safe and without risks to the health of the person employed. Any proprietor who fails to do so is liable to a fine of $500,000 and to imprisonment for six months.
