Senior Counsel Appointed

The following is issued on behalf of the Judiciary:

     The Honourable Chief Justice Andrew Kwok-nang Li is pleased to announce today (April 7) the appointment of three Senior Counsel of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.  They are:

     Mr Kumar Ramanathan
     Mr Yeung Kar-hung, Keith
     Mr Nicholas James Cooney

     The appointments are made by the Chief Justice under section 31A of the Legal Practitioners Ordinance.

     The appointments will take effect from the date of the Instrument of Appointment, which will be executed on May 16, 2009, when the ceremonial proceedings will be held at 10am in Court No. 7 in the High Court.

     The biographical notes of the newly appointed Senior Counsel are as follows:

Mr Kumar Ramanathan

     Mr Kumar Ramanathan, aged 55, obtained his LLB and PCLL at the University of Hong Kong.  He was admitted to the Hong Kong Bar in 1978.  His field of practice is mainly in personal injuries.  He is member of the Inland Revenue Board of Review and a Chairman of the Buildings Appeal Tribunal.

Mr Yeung Kar-hung, Keith

     Mr Yeung Kar-hung, Keith, aged 44, obtained his LLB and PCLL at the University of Hong Kong.  He was admitted to the Hong Kong Bar in 1987.  He has a mixed field of practice in both civil and criminal cases.  He is a Chairman of the Buildings Appeal Tribunal.

Mr Nicholas James Cooney

     Mr Nicholas James Cooney, aged 52, obtained his LLB at the University of Adelaide.  He was admitted to the Supreme Court of South Australia and the High Court of Australia in 1980.  He joined the then Attorney-General's Chambers of the Hong Kong Government in 1993 and was admitted to the Hong Kong Bar in 2000.  His practice is mainly in the civil area.  He is a Chairman of the Buildings Appeal Tribunal.
