Force deeply grieved by the death of Station Sergeant in traffic accident

     The Acting Commissioner of Police, Mr Yam Tat-wing, was deeply grieved by the death of Station Sergeant, Mr Chan Ka-wai, during a traffic accident while on duty today (March 11) and extended condolences to Mr Chan's family.

     About 10.30am, Mr Chan was travelling along Argyle Street towards Waterloo Road on his police motorcycle, heading for the scene of another traffic accident. At the junction of Waterloo Road, Mr. Chan¡¦s motorcycle collided with a public light bus driven by a 58-year-old man which was turning right into Waterloo Road from Argyle Street.

     The seriously injured officer was taken to the Kwong Wah Hospital for medical treatment but later certified dead at 11.47am.

     Investigations by the Special Investigation Team of Traffic, Kowloon West are proceeding.  

     The Force Welfare Services Group have been in touch with Mr Chan's family and would make every effort to help his family during this time of sadness.

     Mr Chan, aged 51, joined the Force in 1978. He was attached to the Patrol subunit of the Enforcement and Control Division of Traffic Kowloon West and had 17-year experience in traffic-related duties. Mr Chan had all along shown great enthusiasm for his work and was highly responsible. He was survived by his wife and three children.
