One of the most promising young violinists of our time, Mengla Huang, will perform with the Hong Kong Children's Symphony Orchestra in two concerts, "A Youthful Vision of the World ¡VMengla Huang and Hong Kong Children's Symphony Orchestra" next month (April).
Under the baton of Dr Yip Wai-hong, Huang will play Paganini's "Violin Concerto No.1 in D" and the orchestra will perform Dvorak's "Carnival Overture" and "Symphony No.9, 'From the New World'".
Born in Shanghai in 1980, Mengla Huang began to study violin at the age of four. He was admitted to the Shanghai Conservatory when he was eight years old and was under the instruction of Professor Lina Yu, with whom he has studied since. Recently, he received his Masters degree and became the one of the youngest faculty member of the renowned conservatory.
In 2002, he stunned the world by winning the first prize at the prestigious Paganini International Violin Competition in Italy, where he also won the Renato De Barbieri Memorial award for the best interpretation of Paganini's caprices and the Mario Ruminelli Memorial award.
Huang has worked with many fine orchestras and conductors. In 2006, he performed for the Queen of Denmark in the Fredensborg Palace in Denmark and was highly praised by the Danish Royal Court. In 2007, he made his New York debut at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center, and his Boston debut at Jordan Hall.
"A Youthful Vision of the World¡VMengla Huang and Hong Kong Children's Symphony Orchestra" is one of the music programmes in the "Family Fiesta" series presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. It will be held at 8pm on April 9 (Thursday) at the Concert Hall, Hong Kong City Hall, and at 8pm on April 11 (Saturday) at the Auditorium, Tsuen Wan Town Hall.
Tickets priced from $80 to $150 are now available at URBTIX outlets. Senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients may have 50% off (limited quotas for CSSA recipients on a first-come, first-served basis). A maximum discount of 20% is offered for group booking and "Family Fiesta Series" schemes.
