Construction company fined for violation of safety rule

     New House Construction Company Limited was fined $60,000 at Kowloon City Magistrates' Court today (February 20) for violation of the Construction Sites (Safety) Regulations.  The prosecution was launched by the Labour Department.

     The case involved a fatal accident on October 22, 2007, at a construction site in Ho Man Tin. A worker fell from a working platform to the ground floor, a distance of about 12.6 metres.

     According to Regulations 38B(1), 68(1)(a) and 68(2)(g) of the Construction Sites (Safety) Regulations, contractors must take adequate steps to prevent a person on the site from falling from a height of two metres or more. Any contractor who fails to do so is liable to a fine of $200,000 and imprisonment for 12 months.
