Report submitted on Institute of Education's development blueprint
*********************************************************

The Education Bureau (EDB) today (February 17) received a report from the University Grants Committee (UGC) on the Development Blueprint of the Hong Kong Institute of Education.

"We would like to thank the UGC for considering the matter in detail and we will carefully study the report's content and recommendations," a spokesman for the EDB said.

"The report raises issues of fundamental importance to the promotion of excellence in the higher education sector.  We will not lose sight of the wider context and Hong Kong's overall interests in considering the report," the spokesman said.

"Attracting talented people to the profession and providing quality teacher education for student teachers are vitally important for the long-term development of Hong Kong.  The Hong Kong Institute of Education has made substantial progress in both areas, and come a long way in improving research and academic development in teacher education over the years."

In August 2007, the Secretary for Education invited the UGC to consider the development blueprint and to let the Government have the UGC's expert views on the proposals.

The report can be viewed at the EDB's website (www.edb.gov.hk) and the UGC's website (www.ugc.edu.hk).
