Employer fined for violation of safety rule

     Daiichi Kenchiku Service Company (HK) Limited was fined $20,000 at Eastern Magistrates' Court today (December 23) for violation of the Occupational Safety and Health Ordinance. The prosecution was launched by the Labour Department.

     The case involved a fatal accident at a workplace in Quarry Bay on January 27, in which a cleaning worker fell to her death while cleaning at high levels.

     According to sections 6(1), 6(2)(a) and 6(2)(c) of the Occupational Safety and Health Ordinance, the employer must, so far as reasonably practicable, provide and maintain a safe system of work, and provide the necessary information, instruction, training and supervision to ensure the safety and health at work of his employee. Any employer who fails to do so is liable to a fine of $200,000 and imprisonment for six months.
