HK students achieve good results in International Junior Science Olympiad(with photos)
*********************************************************

Hong Kong students have won two silver and three bronze medals in the Fifth International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) in Korea, the best achievement since the Hong Kong team began participating in the Olympiad in 2006.

More than 250 scientifically gifted secondary students from 45 countries/regions, including Germany, Argentina, Australia, Ghana, Lithonia and the Netherlands, took part in the Olympiad, in Gyeongnam, between December 7-16.

Hong Kong delegates were the best performers from a local science competition, the Hong Kong Budding Scientists Award (2007-2008). The Gifted Education Section of the Curriculum Development Institute under the Education Bureau had commissioned the Faculty of Science of the CUHK to provide training to the students from March to November.

The results of the competition are as follows:

Silver  S4 Lui Man-hin, Benjamin   King's College
Silver  S4 Kwan Chin-wai           Ying Wa College
Bronze  S4 Chu Ka-ying, Ashleigh   Heep Yunn School
Bronze  S4 Yeung Yan-ho            STFA Lee Shau Kee
                                   College
Bronze  S4 Yu Cheuk-hin, Anthony   Queen's College

All the students from the Hong Kong Team will be invited to join a Science Research Programme organised by the Faculty of Science, CUHK where they will carry out their own scientific research under the guidance of university academics to further develop their potential.

The syllabus for the IJSO was adapted from the International Baccalaureate Programme for 15-year-old students covering Physics, Chemistry and Biology topics up to Secondary 6 level. The competition comprised a multiple-choice test, a theoretical examination and an experimental examination.

The participants were also given invaluable opportunities to visit museums and historical centres to broaden their horizons.

Snapshots and related information about the competition can be found at the website (http://resources.edb.gov.hk/gifted/ijso).
