Following is the transcript (English portion) of remarks by the Chief Secretary for Administration, Mr Henry Tang, at a media stand-up on 2008-09 Policy Address at the Legislative Council Building today (October 15):
We are facing immense challenges and uncertainties brought about by the global financial turmoil. The Policy Address just presented by the Chief Executive sets out the right strategy in these challenging times. It is reassuring, pragmatic and forward-looking.
We have to press ahead with the policy objectives of the Chief Executive in his last Policy Address that he set for the third-term Government. We would turn challenges into opportunities in order to strengthen our financial system, and also to look for new breakthroughs.
The Chief Executive has positively addressed the community's concerns over a wide range of livelihood, environment, and governance issues. And he has proposed concrete measures with timetables.
It would take the joint determination and confidence of everybody in the community to overcome the challenges of this turmoil. The CE and the SAR Government are determined to work with the community. We have confidence in ourselves, and the community has confidence in ourselves. We will work together to overcome these challenges. Thank you very much.
