Judicial Appointments

    The following is issued on behalf of the Judiciary:

    The Judiciary today (June 30) announced the appointments of His Honour Judge LI Hon-leung as Chief District Judge and Mr TONG Man as Chief Magistrate.  The appointments will take effect from July 2, 2008. 

    The appointments are made by the Chief Executive on the recommendation of the Judicial Officers Recommendation Commission. 

    The biographical notes of the appointees are as follows:

His Honour Judge LI Hon-leung

His Honour Judge Li was born in Hong Kong in 1955.  He obtained LL.B. and P.C.LL. from the University of Hong Kong in 1986 and 1987 respectively.  He was called to the Bar in Hong Kong in 1987 and joined the then Legal Department as Assistant Crown Counsel in the same year.  He was promoted to Crown Counsel in 1988 and Senior Crown Counsel in 1991.  He was appointed as Magistrate in 1993, Principal Magistrate in 1999, Chief Magistrate in 2000 and District Judge in 2007. 


Mr TONG Man

Mr Tong was born in Hong Kong in 1953. He obtained B.Soc.Sc., LL.B. and P.C.LL in 1977, 1986 and 1987 respectively. In 1987, he was called to the Bar in Hong Kong. He joined the then Legal Department as Assistant Crown Counsel in 1987.  He was promoted to Crown Counsel in 1988 and Senior Crown Counsel in 1991.  He was appointed as Magistrate in 1993 and was promoted to Principal Magistrate in 2001.
