Contractor fined for violation of safety rule

    A contractor was fined $22,500 at Shatin Magistrates' Court today (June 27) for violation of Construction Sites (Safety) Regulations. The prosecution was launched by the Labour Department.

    The case involved a fatal accident which occurred on November 28 last year at a construction site in Tai Po, in which a worker fell to his death from the top of a glass house structure of over two metres.

    According to Regulations 38B(1), 68(1)(a) and 68(2)(g) of the Construction Sites (Safety) Regulations, the contractor responsible for a construction site shall take adequate steps to prevent a person on the site from falling from a height of two metres or more. Any contractor who fails to do so is liable to a fine of $200,000 and imprisonment for 12 months.
             
    In addition, according to Regulations 48(1)(a), 68(1)(a) and 68(2)(b) of the Construction Sites (Safety) Regulations, the contractor shall provide each workman employed on the site with a suitable safety helmet. Any contractor who fails to do so is liable to a fine of $50,000.
