SED to attend APEC Education Ministerial Meeting in Peru

    The Secretary for Education, Mr Michael Suen, will attend the fourth Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation's Education Ministerial Meeting (AEMM) in Peru next Wednesday and Thursday (June 11 and 12) to share with member economies Hong Kong's initiatives on four priority areas identified for discussion.

    The four priority areas are: mathematics and science; career and technical education; learning each other's languages, and information and communication technologies and systemic reform.

    The AEMM, in Lima, Peru, will have the theme, "21st Century Competencies and Skills for All". 

    The AEMM is an opportunity for education ministers and senior officials of APEC member economies to strengthen collaborative initiatives in education in support of APEC's overall vision of enhancing economic growth and prosperity for the region and strengthening the Asia-Pacific community.

    During his stay in Lima, Mr Suen will hold an informal meeting with the Vice-Minister of the Chinese Ministry of Education, Mr Zhang Xin-sheng, to exchange views on education matters of mutual concern.

    He will also explore collaboration and share views on developments in Hong Kong's education system in separate meetings with Brunei's Minister of Education, Mr Pehin Dato Abdul Rahman Talb, and Singapore's Senior Minister of State of the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts, Rear Admiral Lui Tuck Yew.

    En route to Lima, Mr Suen will stop over in Toronto, Canada, on Monday (June 9), where he will hold a breakfast seminar with local academics, and business and community leaders. He will deliver a speech on "Nurturing Talent in a Globalised World ¡V Hong Kong's Game Plan and Opportunities for Canada" and will meet local media representatives there.
