Contractors each fined $20,000 for safety rules violation

    Tai Yue Engineering Company Limited and Multi-Honest Engineering Company Limited were each fined $20,000 at Eastern Magistrates' Court today (May 19) for violating the Construction Sites (Safety) Regulations. The prosecutions were launched by the Labour Department.

    The case involved a fatal accident at a construction site in Pok Fu Lam on July 25, 2007 when a worker fell to his death while engaged in painting of ceilingˇ¦s fixtures.

    According to Regulation 38A(2)/38AA(2) of the Construction Sites (Safety) Regulations, the contractor must ensure that suitable and adequate safe access to and egress from a place of work are provided and properly maintained. Any contractor who fails to do so is liable to a fine of $200,000 and imprisonment for 12 months.

    In addition, according to Regulation 38C of the Construction Sites (Safety) Regulations, the contractor must provide and ensure the use of  a scaffold, ladder or other means of support which are safe for the purpose. Any contractor who fails to do so is liable to a fine of $200,000 and imprisonment for 12 months.
