Appointments to Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Council

    The Government announced today (March 31), that the Chief Executive (CE) had appointed Dr Marvin Cheung Kin-tung as Chairman of the Council of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) for a term of two years starting from tomorrow (April 1).

    The CE also appointed Dr Michael Mak Hoi-hung as the Vice-Chairman of the HKUST Council for the same period.  Dr Mak is a private medical practitioner.

    The Secretary for Education, Mr Michael M Y Suen, welcomed Dr Cheung's and Dr Makˇ¦s appointments.  Dr Cheung is currently the Vice-chairman of the HKUST Council.
   
    "Dr Cheung and Dr Mak have been very committed to serving the community and have a solid track record of public service.  I am confident that HKUST will go from strength to strength under the able leadership of Dr Cheung and Dr Mak," Mr Suen said. 

    Mr Suen also paid warm tribute to Dr John Chan, the former Chairman of the Council of HKUST.

    "Over the past six years, Dr Chan has spearheaded numerous initiatives in furthering the development of HKUST.  Under his distinguished leadership, HKUST has made significant achievements in enhancing the quality of teaching, learning and research and has commanded top positions in renowned university ranking tables."

    "The achievements of HKUST over the years owe much to his outstanding leadership," Mr Suen said.

    The HKUST Council is the governing body of the university.  It consists of 33 members, including the Chairman and Deputy Chairman who are directly appointed by the CE.
