Proprietor fined for violation of safety rules

    Wing Lung was fined $35,000 at Kowloon City Magistrates' Court today (February 11) for violation of the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance.  The prosecution was launched by the Labour Department.

    The case involved a fatal accident on May 22, 2007, at a workplace in Cheung Sha Wan. A worker fell to his death from a wooden ladder while installing the wooden cover of the roller shutter in the workplace.

    According to Section 6A(1), 6A(2)(a) and 6A(3) of the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance, the proprietor must provide a system of work to ensure the safety and health of the employee.  Failure to do so could mean a fine of $500,000 and imprisonment for six months.
