Peking opera virtuosi to give three performances in December

    A group of Peking opera virtuosi, including Ye Shaolan, Chen Shaoyun and Zhang Xuejin, will be in Hong Kong next month (December) to showcase diverse styles of Peking opera in three performances, which are selected from well-known repertories and excerpts.

     Featuring national class one performers and Peking Opera Theatre of Beijing, the star-studded performance, "Three Stylistic Schools of Peking Opera", will be staged on December 28, 29 and 30 at 7.30pm, at the Grand Theatre, Hong Kong Cultural Centre. Details are as follows:

December 28 (Friday)
"A Meeting of Heroes, Invoking the East Wind and The Huarong Pass"
Cast (in appearance order): Ye Shaolan, Chen Shaoyun, Zhang Xuejin, Huang Dehua, An Ping, Shang Changrong, Zhu Qiang, Ye Jinyuan, Zhang Hongwei

December 29 (Saturday)

December 30 (Sunday)
"The Four Titled Scholars"
Cast (in appearance order): Zhang Xuejin, Chen Shaoyun, Pei Yongjie, Shang Changrong, Ye Shaolan, Wang Rongrong, Zhu Qiang, Lang Shilin

     The "three stylistic schools" refers to the "Qi" school of the south (Zhou Xinfang, the 'Qilintong', from Shanghai); the "Ma" school of the north (Ma Lianliang from Beijing) and the "Tang" school of the further north (Tang Yunsheng from the northeast China).  The founding master of each of the three schools was held in high repute in the performing art and together they had been influential to the development of Peking opera.

     "Three Stylistic Schools of Peking Opera", with simplified surtitles in English, is presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. It is also one of the highlight programmes to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

     Tickets priced at $100, $180, $240 and $340 are now available at URBTIX outlets, while senior citizens, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients can have 50% off (limited quotas for students and CSSA recipients on a first-come, first-served basis).  A 10% discount applies to Friends of LCSD performing venues.  There will be a maximum of 20% off for various booking schemes.  Please refer to the programme leaflets for details.
