Xun Xiang Metalware Company Limited was fined $50,000 at Kwun Tong Magistrates' Court today (October 18) for violating the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance. The prosecution was launched by the Labour Department.
The case involved a fatal accident on January 12 at a work place in Kwun Tong, when a worker was killed while engaged in dismantling the wreckage of a scrap ship.
According to Section 6A(2)(a) of the ordinance, the proprietor must provide and maintain a system of work that is safe and without risk to the health of the employee. Any proprietor who fails to do so is liable to a fine of $500,000 and to imprisonment for six months.
