CE's speech at "Hong Kong Riding High" Promotion in Auckland (with photos/video)
************************************************************

Following is the speech by the Chief Executive, Mr Donald Tsang, at the "Hong Kong Riding High" Promotion in Auckland, New Zealand today (September 11):

Ladies and gentlemen, good afternoon,

I am delighted to join you today for this special event.

New Zealand has a long sporting history and a proud sporting tradition.  So, it is fitting that the focus of our event today is the 2008 Olympic Games - more specifically, the Olympic and Paralympic Equestrian Events to be held in Hong Kong next year.

The hosting of the Equestrian events in August 2008 is a matter of great pride for Hong Kong.  It provides us with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be part of the Beijing Olympiad, and to join the ranks of Olympic cities.

Today, I am inviting you to help Hong Kong celebrate the spirit of the Olympics. We want you to saddle up for a visit to our city next year.

Here's a taste of what to expect.

The competition will be held at two venues, each capable of accommodating about 20,000 spectators.

The dressage and show jumping events will take place at a brand new, world-class arena that has been purpose built for the Olympics. The cross-country competition will be held on a magnificent, undulating course among the rolling hills of our countryside - yes, Hong Kong is not just high rises and shopping malls, we also have large tracts of open space for you to enjoy.

Last month, we held a test event to make sure our facilities are up to scratch. Many of the international riders and officials who took part said the facilities were the best they had ever seen. We were, of course, very happy to hear that. But, it has only encouraged us to do even better next year.

Competitors, officials and supporters can expect a warm Olympic welcome when they come to Hong Kong next year. But we would also like to broaden the appeal of the events beyond the mainstream equestrian audience. And, we would also like to encourage people going to Beijing to consider stopping off in Hong Kong on the way there, or the way back ... or both.

Apart from enjoying all the grace and action of the equestrian events, visitors can enjoy a huge range of shopping, dining and entertainment experiences in Hong Kong.

In a way, I know I am preaching to the converted because every year we welcome a big contingent of Kiwi supporters for the annual Rugby Sevens tournament. They always have a great time - as I'm sure visitors to Hong Kong will experience during the Olympic events next year.

Ladies and gentlemen, I invite you to join us next year for what will be an unforgettable Olympics. And if you can't make the Olympics, come and see us anyway!

     Thank you.
