COSCO-HIT Terminals (HK) Ltd was fined $10,000 at Tsuen Wan Magistrates' Court today (September 3) for violation of the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance. The prosecution was launched by the Labour Department.
The case involved a fatal accident on April 23, 2006 at a workplace in Kwai Chung when a crane operator fell 30 metres to the ground from the gangway of a quay crane.
A Labour Department spokesman said proprietors must provide and maintain a system of work in connection with shift change arrangement for quay crane operators. Failure to do so could mean a fine of $500,000 and imprisonment for six months.
