Suspected cases of food poisoning investigated
**********************************************

    The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health is today (August 27) investigating two cases of suspected food poisoning involving five people who felt sick after having meals at a restaurant in Causeway Bay.

     The first case involved three men, aged 27 to 28, who patronised the restaurant after midnight on August 16. They developed abdominal pain, diarrhoea and vomiting about 16 to 16.5 hours after the meal. Two of them attended the Accident and Emergency Department of Queen Mary Hospital. No hospitalisation was required.

     The second case involved two men, aged 31 and 33, who developed abdominal pain, diarrhoea and vomiting about 13 to 14 hours after having dinner at the same restaurant on August 24. Both of them consulted private doctors and no hospitalisation was required.

     Members of the public, especially food handlers, are reminded to observe good personal and environmental hygiene to prevent food-borne diseases.

     They are advised to take the following measures:

* Do not consume food that has been discoloured or tastes abnormal; and
* Wash hands thoroughly before eating and after going to the toilet.

     Food handlers are reminded to:

* Obtain raw materials from reliable sources;
* Clean and cook food thoroughly before serving, particularly crustacean and bivalve seafood such as shrimp, crab, oysters and clams;
* Keep raw and cooked foods separately to reduce the risk of cross-contamination;
* Cold dishes should be kept at 4¢J or below and hot-served foods, at 60¢J or above over warming devices;
* Food should not be left at room temperature for more than two hours; and
* Observe good personal and environmental hygiene.
