Sing Pao fined for breaching MPFS Ordinance

The following is issued on behalf of the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority:

     Sing Pao Newspaper Management Limited was fined $72,000 at the Kwun Tong Magistracy today (August 27), after being convicted of offences under the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Ordinance.

     Sing Pao Newspaper Management Limited (BR no.: 31375010) was charged for offences under section 7A(8) of the Ordinance. The defendant pleaded guilty to 18 counts of failing to make MPF contributions for six employees within the prescribed time for various contribution periods between July and December 2006. The defendant was fined $4,000 for each summons, totalling $72,000.

     In the District Court today the MPFA obtained an order for payment of outstanding MPF contributions at about $300,000 against an employer.

     The court today issued a judgment against Fidelity Concept Development Limited trading as Royal Plaza Restaurant. The defendant was ordered to pay the MPFA $308,026.87, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable to 63 employees.

     The amount awarded at the District Court will be reimbursed to the employees' MPF accounts as soon as it is received by the MPFA. The District Court further ordered the defendant to pay costs of $930.
