People bringing illicit live animals into Hong Hong faced prosecution,the Customs and Excise Department warned today (August 24).
About 2.30pm, Customs officers of Lo Wu Control Point intercepted a passenger who had arrived from Shenzhen. The passenger had a dog, worth about $500, hidden in a plastic bag.
The local man, aged 20, was arrested.
The case has been handed over to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department for follow-up investigation.
Under the Rabies Regulation of the Rabies Ordinance, live animals must have a permit before they can be imported into Hong Kong. The maximum penalty is a fine of $50,000 and an imprisonment for one year.
