Kunqu artists to show their rich tradition

    Renowned Chinese Kunqu artists will perform in "An Operatic Legacy 'Four Generations of Kunqu Artists' Showcase Series" next month (August) to present the history, the essence and the verve of Kunqu opera.

     This series is a star-studded occasion featuring the pick of the cast from six Kunqu opera troupes in China. Distinguished artists Hou Shaokui, Zhang Jiqing, Wang Shiyu, Zhang Jingxian, Cai Zhengren, Shi Xiaomei, Yue Meiti, Zhang Fuguang, Wang Fengmei, Liu Yilong, Wang Shiyao, Zhang Shizheng, Wang Fang, Liang Guyin, Ji Zhenhua, Hu Jinfang, Huang Xiaowu, Ke Jun, Yu Jiulin and Shen Fengying will take audiences to experience the rich and profound tradition of this performing arts.

     The programme is divided into two sections: "Vocal Delights ¡V Kunqu Artists in Concert" and "Excerpts from Famous Kunqu Operas".

     "Vocal Delights ¡V Kunqu Artists in Concert" will be staged on August 26 and 27 (Sunday and Monday) at 7.30pm at Theatre 2, Sunbeam Theatre. Performing artists are Hou Shaokui, Zhang Jiqing, Wang Shiyu, Cai Zhengren, Wang Fengmei and Ji Zhenhua.

     "Excerpts from Famous Kunqu Operas" will be staged on August 28, 29 and 30 at 7.30pm at the Concert Hall, Hong Kong City Hall. Details are as follows:

August 28 (Tuesday)
Excerpts from: "Stealing the Poem", "Writing the Petition", "The Marriage Proposal", "Reading the Petition" and "Devastating News".

August 29 (Wednesday)
Excerpts from: "The Gossipy Plump Girl", "Picking Firewood", "The Broken Bridge", "Seduction with the Lute" and "To the Banquet Armed".

August 30 (Thursday)
Excerpts from: "At the Toilette Table", "Giving Birth", "Recovering from Blindness", "Nocturnal Escape" and "Feigning Jealousy".

     "An Operatic Legacy 'Four Generations of Kunqu Artists' Showcase Series", which is a programme to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the establishment of HKSAR, is presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. Ticket prices from $100 to $340 are now available at URBTIX outlets. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients (limited tickets for students and CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis).
