International Arts Carnival opens (with photos)

    The annual spectacular summer festival, International Arts Carnival, opened today (July 4) at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre.

     Officiating at the opening ceremony was Secretary for Home Affairs Mr Tsang Tak-sing. Before the ceremony, the Director of Leisure and Cultural Services, Mr Thomas Chow presented prizes to the winners of the International Arts Carnival Graphic Design Competition at the reception.

     The Best Cover Design award went to form two student Carain Yeung Ka Wing.  Form five student Lam Yuet Ming was the winner of the secondary school section, while eight-year-old Cheung Hoi Ching was the winner of the primary school section.

     The International Arts Carnival Graphic Design Competition attracted 759 entries this year.

     Organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the annual summer arts festival, from today to August 12, will feature around 400 events for family enjoyment.

     This year, the carnival is also one of the celebration programmes which marks the 10th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

     Leading off this year's International Arts Carnival is an acrobatic ballet "Swan Lake" performed by Guangdong Acrobatic Troupe of China and produced by Shanghai City Dance Company Limited. Featuring outstanding acrobatic pointe work together with spectacular stage art and costume designs, it is a re-interpretation of the renowned Russian ballet classic written by Tchaikovsky.

     Other performance line-up includes music, drama, puppetry, interactive theatre, film and a marching band parade.
 
     Apart from performances, there will be workshops, school tours, exhibitions, cultural tours, Children's Fun Week, library and museum activities.

     Tickets priced from $40 to $300 are available now at URBTIX outlets. Half-price tickets are available for full-time students, senior citizens, people with disabilities and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients. Package discounts of up to 15% are available for full-price performing arts programmes/films.
