Call to stop consumption of possible contaminated sesame tahini
*********************************************************

The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) today (May 11) appealed to the trade to stop selling a batch of "MaraNatha Brand Organic Raw Sesame Tahini, No Salt" (340g), a product of USA, suspected to be contaminated with Salmonella. Consumers are also advised not to eat them.

The affected products are sold in jars carrying a code 'UPC 0 51651 09327 9' and 'Use By date 07/27/07' (July 27, 2007).

"Salmonella is a pathogen that may cause gastrointestinal discomfort, such as abdominal pain and diarrhoea," a CFS spokesman said.

He said the appeal was made as the Canadian authorities had alerted consumers not to eat the products in question.

"The CFS will contact the relevant authorities for further information. We have alerted the trade and local distributors about the incident, and are closely monitoring the situation," the spokesman said.
