********************************************************

The Education and Manpower Bureau welcomed the final report of the Committee on Teachers' Work. Secretary for Education and Manpower Professor Arthur KC Li said recommendations made by the committee would help the Government, the education sector and society strengthen their support for frontline teachers in doing a good job to nurture Hong Kong's next generation.

Professor Li was speaking today (December 19) after receiving the final report submitted by committee chairman Professor Edmond Ko.

"I wish to express my gratitude to Professor Ko, other members of the committee and members of the advisory group for their hard work in this study.  I also wish to thank members of the education sector for giving their views and providing necessary information to facilitate the committee's work," Professor Li said.

"I am pleased to note that this research has a very wide coverage involving more than 7,000 people from education bodies, school councils, teacher training institutes, school sponsoring bodies, school management to frontline teachers.  There is no doubt about its strong representation.

"Working with independence, committee members have consolidated views from the whole education sector and arrived at valuable recommendations following a thorough study and in-depth analysis of the views collected.

"We need time to look closely into the many recommendations put forward in this comprehensive report and shall come up with a more substantive response later on," Professor Li said.

He appealed to stakeholders in education, including parents and members of the community, to stand by the bureau for its various measures in support of teachers' work.

"Encouragement from the community will enhance our teachers' job satisfaction so that they will be even more devoted to teaching, to the benefits of our students," Professor Li said.
