Sir Joseph Hotung donates $100 million to support the setting up of Academy for Gifted Education
******************************************************

In response to press enquiries about his donation to the Government to support the setting up of an Academy for Gifted Education, Sir Joseph Hotung issued the following statement through the Education and Manpower Bureau (EMB) today (Oct 11):

"I fully share the vision and commitment of the HKSARG to provide children with quality education and opportunities to excel in areas in which they are gifted and to expand the talent pool of HK in maintaining it as a world city.

Hong Kong's children's talents are wide-ranging and we should take measures to develop their diverse potential as fully as possible.  The setting up of an Academy for Gifted Education, as proposed by the EMB, is an important step to benefit more students with exceptional talents.  This should benefit Hong Kong in the longer term.

I am the third generation of a Hong Kong family and I have children and grandchildren who were born here.  We have a history of supporting education, in particular, the younger generation.  I am pleased that my donation can help to make a contribution to a programme of gifted education in Hong Kong.

I look forward to seeing the Academy encouraging the efforts of teachers, parents, academics and business and community leaders participating in this project.

It is my fond hope these young people who will benefit from this initiative will contribute as future leaders to Hong Kong society and the region."
