Hong Kong's triumph in International Physics Olympiad
*****************************************************

Hong Kong has scored three silvers, one bronze, and an honourable mention at the 37th International Physics Olympiad in Singapore.

The Hong Kong team of five was selected from the beneficiaries of the Education and Manpower (EMB)'s "Support Measures for the Exceptionally Gifted Students Scheme". They received intensive training in three phases for nine months and tackled various challenges for further development of their physics talent and endured the final selection. The scheme, introduced in 2001, provides different series of structured enhancement programmes in sciences, mathematics and leadership skills to help develop the potential of gifted students.

Last year, Ethe MB jointly organised the Hong Kong Physics Olympiad 2005 with the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and the HK Physical Society. As one of the measures to challenge and nurture students gifted in physics, participants with outstanding performance in the competition were selected to take part in a series of Physics enhancement programmes conducted by the professors of the Department of Physics, HKUST. After nine months of vigorous training, the five most outstanding students were selected to represent Hong Kong in the 37th International Physics Olympiad.

Eighty-six teams of five members from various countries and territories participated in the Olympiad, which started on July 8 and finished today (July 17).

The main theme for the Olympiad was to foster friendly international relationships with fellow physicists all over the world, to discover, encourage and to challenge youngsters gifted in physics, and to promote physics education.

The Hong Kong Team was led by Professor Yang Zhi-yu of HKUST, who also took an active part in staging training programmes for the students, and the Senior Curriculum Development Officer (Science) of EMB, Ms Grace Lui.
