CE visits Kwun Tong district (with photos)
******************************************

The Chief Executive, Mr Donald Tsang, gained an understanding of the needs of residents in Kwun Tong during a visit to the district today (June 14). Mr Tsang walked through the streets that fall within a local urban redevelopment project and visited a rehabilitation centre.

Mr Tsang toured the redevelopment area including Yan Oi Court, Yan Shun Lane and Yue Man Square Garden and he enjoyed a panoramic view of the area from a shopping mall in the vicinity.

Under the redevelopment proposal, about 24 building blocks, 5,000 households and 330 shops would be affected. The proposed land use includes the formation of a recreation and green zone, erection of commercial and residential buildings, a Government office, a public transport exchange and community facilities.

"Most of the buildings in the district are dilapidated with poor living conditions. Revitalisation of the district is as timely as it is essential," the Chief Executive said.

"The Government and the Urban Renewal Authority (URA) will study arrangements for the redevelopment project to improve the building quality and ease traffic congestion in the district. The URA will consult the various parties concerned as the project will affect a large number of households and shopowners," Mr Tsang added.

He then visited the salvation Army's Tak Tin Community Day Rehabilitation Service in Tak Tin Estate, Lam Tin, where rehabilitation services are provided to stimulate the potential and enhance the self-help ability and basic working skills of mentally challenged trainees.

Mr Tsang saw some trainees learning basic cookery, computer skills and cloth weaving, skills that will enhance their social interaction.

He looked at the handicrafts created by the trainees and praised their creativity. "The craftsmanship is excellent. It shows that with good stimulation, everyone can develop to their full potential," the Chief Executive said. Mr Tsang joined a trainee in creating a mosaic with some colourful pebbles.

In his first Policy Address, the Chief Executive announced the Government's long-term social policies to help the needy. Community support services would be strengthened to help people with disabilities and their families with the early integration into the community.

Mr Tsang took the opportunity to speak with the family members of some trainees at the centre to better understand their needs. "The Government will continue to study various hostel services for the disabled and strengthen the community support for the provision of more services to people with disabilities and their family members," Mr Tsang said.
