FEHD meets poultry trade
************************

The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department today (March 6) briefed representatives of the live poultry retail trade on the Government's decision to suspend the supply of live poultry from Guangdong Province for three weeks following confirmation of a human case of H5N1 avian influenza in Guangzhou.

The department's Assistant Director Ms Rhonda Lo explained to the trade that the temporary suspension was only a preventive measure taken after assessing public health risks. The suspension would also allow the relevant authorities to conduct a comprehensive investigation.

Ms Lo also reminded the trade that operators of live poultry retail outlets should strictly observe measures against avian influenza.
¡@¡@
These included thorough daily cleansing of poultry stalls and putting on proper protective gear when handling live poultry.
¡@¡@
The FEHD will issue letters today to all market stall operators and fresh provision shop licensees selling live poultry, urging them to follow these preventive measures.
¡@¡@
During inspection of these stalls, department staff will pay closer attention to the condition of the chickens and any non-compliance of the protective measures imposed.

The department will maintain close contact with the trade and keep them informed of any new developments.
