HKO organises course on earthquake and tsunami
**********************************************

A public invitation has been issued for enrolments on a training course on "The Basics of Earthquake and Tsunami" organised by the Hong Kong Observatory in October.

At the end of 2004, the severe earthquake in the Indian Ocean caused tsunamis that devastated areas in South Asia.  This disaster drew world attention to earthquakes and tsunamis.  The Observatory is organising this training course to give people a basic understanding of earthquakes and tsunamis and the appropriate precautionary measures to take against these natural disasters.

The lecturer, Mr Chan Ying-wa, Scientific Officer of the Observatory, said a public education programme was crucial to the success in prevention and mitigation of natural disasters.  "This course enables people to have a better understanding of the relationship between earthquake and tsunami.  It also increases their awareness and preparedness towards such natural disasters," Mr Chan said.

The course covers basic knowledge of earthquakes and tsunamis, related precautionary measures and safety rules, major historical earthquakes and tsunamis, as well as earthquakes that affected Hong Kong.  The course will be held on the morning of October 8, at a fee of $75 per person.  Those interested are invited to check out details and enrol at:
