CE announces appointments of new Principal Officials

***************************************************

Following is the transcript (English portion) of the press conference by the Chief Executive, Mr Tung Chee Hwa, at the Central Government Offices today (August 4) to announce senior Government appointments:

CE: I am pleased to announce that the Central People's Government has, on my nomination and recommendation, approved the appointments of the Financial Secretary and several Principal Officials. Mr Henry Tang has been appointed the Financial Secretary; Mr Ambrose Lee will become the Secretary for Security; Mr John Tsang Secretary for Commerce, Industry and Technology; and Mr Raymond Wong Commissioner of ICAC (Independent Commission Against Corruption).

I think the public know every one of them well. They all have excellent leadership skills and a wealth of experience.

Mr Tang came from the business sector. Before joining the Government, he served in various public service posts. After working in the Government for more than a year, he has gained a good grasp of its structure and operation. He is also very familiar with the operation of the market. He is the best choice for the Financial Secretary's post.

The Secretary for Security, Mr Ambrose Lee, the Secretary for Commerce, Industry and Technology, Mr John Tsang, and the Commissioner of ICAC, Mr Raymond Wong, are ideal choices too. They have been serving the Government for many years and have in-depth understanding of the Government and how the policy process works. I am confident they will do an excellent job.

I am also confident that the Financial Secretary and the three other Principal Officials will help us move towards a more open, progressive and efficient Government, to work for the interests of the people of Hong Kong and do their utmost to serve the public.

I hope they can count on the support of the community as we work together for the development of Hong Kong.
