Chief Executive's transcript

****************************

Following is the transcript (English portion) of a media session by the Chief Executive, Mr Tung Chee Hwa, at the Central Government Offices today (July 9):

Chief Executive: Let me say a few words. At present the Administration is facing some huge challenges. Let me say this, I am confident, we as a team, the whole Administration will be able to ride out the challenges. We remain united to discharge our duties. We will learn from experiences. We will respond to the aspirations of our citizens. And we will take actions to allay public dissatisfaction and improve the effectiveness of the Government.

Our goal is clear: it is to win back the support and the trust of the people. In order to improve our governance, to revive our economy and create more jobs and to unite our community, we will listen carefully to all proposals and suggestions from the community.

The Government has decided to defer the resumption of the second reading of the National Security (Legislative Provisions) Bill. We will listen more carefully, taking more views from the public and we will deal with the matter more prudently. Today we know that some groups are organising rallies outside the Legislative Council Building. Let me reiterate once again that the Government will be listening to their views carefully, including any dissatisfaction they might be expressing and any aspirations they might have.

I am pleased that the latest Economic Freedom of the World Report has ranked Hong Kong the freest economy in the world for the seventh year in a row. We will strive to safeguard this position and maintain local and international investors' confidence in Hong Kong. At present, the most important thing is to focus all our efforts to maintain stability and solidarity of our community, and to revive our economy as soon as possible.

Thank you very much.
