CE welcomes lifting of CDC travel advisory on Hong Kong

*******************************************************

Following is the statement issued by the Chief Executive, Mr Tung Chee Hwa:

Today the people of Hong Kong welcome the decision by the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to lift the travel advisory on Hong Kong. The announcement is a further indication that the SARS disease is contained, travel to Hong Kong is safe and life is returning to normal.

The announcement by the CDC coupled with the 23 May 2003 announcement by the World Health Organization (WHO) to lift its Hong Kong travel advisory reinforces the world's confidence in Hong Kong's ability to control the virus and limit the further spread of the disease.

As Hong Kong continues to persevere through these incredibly difficult circumstances, we must thank our medical professionals - especially the medical doctors, nurses and support staff who remain dedicated to the health of our citizens. It is also the result of the concerted efforts of the whole community in controlling the spread of SARS.

With the CDC's and WHO's recognition of Hong Kong's success in containing SARS, we must continue to be vigilant in our recovery efforts. We remain committed to combating the virus and safeguarding the public's health while making Hong Kong a favored international destination.
