Avian flu preventive measures in Hong Kong
Vaccination
- Vaccination of all chickens in local farms against H5 avian influenza
since June 2003
- All imported chickens vaccinated by mid January this year
- All chickens now available in the market in Hong Kong have been
vaccinated
Local Farm Regulation
- Tightened biosecurity measures (e.g. birdproofing all farms)
- Testing of antibody level of vaccinated chickens and monitoring
of sentinel chickens
- Pre-market approval
Import Control
- Registration of Mainland farms
- Health certificate requirements
- Import control (monitoring the antibody level, dead and sick bird
monitoring, random screening test (H5 RRT-PCR))
Segregation Policy
- Segregation and central slaughtering of waterfowls since 1998
- Separate and individual packing of waterfowl offal for sale to
prevent cross-contamination since late 2001
- Segregation of quails from chickens at all levels since late 2001
Market Rest Days
- Four rest days per month in the wholesale market (9, 10, 24 and
25th days of each month)
- Two rest days per month for all retail outlets (10 and 25th days
of each month)
Hygiene Requirements of Wholesale and Retail Markets
- Cage washing and disinfection at the wholesale market daily
- Specific hygiene requirements and conditions in market tenancy/licence
for retail outlets
- If H5 isolates are found in an individual retail outlet, depopulation
and suspension of business of the outlet for thorough cleansing and
disinfection
Human Surveillance of Influenza
- A comprehensive surveillance system is in place to monitor the
disease trend and circulating influenza viruses
- The programme covers a network of clinics, hospitals and laboratories
in the public and private sectors
Avian Influenza Surveillance
- Dead bird surveillance at local farms, the import level, wholesale
and retail levels
- Environmental surveillance at local farms and the wholesale and
retail levels
- Surveillance of waterfowls in recreation parks, wild birds and pet
bird market
