TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN
 
HERE IS THE LATEST TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN ISSUED
BY THE HONG KONG OBSERVATORY.
 
THE NO. 8 NORTHEAST GALE OR STORM SIGNAL IS IN FORCE.
 
THIS MEANS THAT WINDS WITH MEAN SPEEDS OF 63 KILOMETRES PER
HOUR OR MORE ARE EXPECTED FROM THE NORTHEAST QUARTER.
 
AT 4 A.M., TROPICAL STORM TORAJI WAS CENTRED ABOUT 140
KILOMETRES SOUTH-SOUTHEAST OF HONG KONG (NEAR 21.1 DEGREES
NORTH 114.5 DEGREES EAST) AND IS FORECAST TO MOVE WEST
SLOWLY, EDGING CLOSER TO THE VICINITY OF THE PEARL RIVER
ESTUARY.


 
IN THE PAST FEW HOURS, LOCAL WINDS HAVE STRENGTHENED WITH
GALE WINDS ON HIGH GROUND AND OVER THE SOUTHERN PART OF THE
TERRITORY. ACCORDING TO THE PRESENT FORECAST TRACK, TORAJI
WILL BE CLOSEST TO HONG KONG IN THE NEXT COUPLE OF HOURS,
SKIRTING WITHIN 150 KILOMETRES SOUTH OF THE TERRITORY. THE
GALE OR STORM SIGNAL, NO. 8 WILL REMAIN IN FORCE AT LEAST
UNTIL 10 A.M. TODAY. WITH TORAJI WEAKENING AND MOVING AWAY
FROM HONG KONG, LOCAL WINDS WILL MODERATE GRADUALLY DURING
THE DAY TODAY. DEPENDING ON THE MOVEMENT OF TORAJI AND THE
WEAKENING TREND OF LOCAL WINDS, THE OBSERVATORY WILL ASSESS
THE TIME OF ISSUING THE STRONG WIND SIGNAL, NO. 3.
 
LOCALLY, THERE WILL BE OCCASIONAL SQUALLY SHOWERS TODAY.
SEAS ARE VERY ROUGH WITH SWELLS. MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC ARE
ADVISED TO STAY AWAY FROM THE SHORELINE AND NOT TO ENGAGE
IN WATER SPORTS.


 
IN THE PAST HOUR, THE MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS RECORDED AT
TATE'S CAIRN, WAGLAN ISLAND AND CHEUNG CHAU BEACH WERE 75,
74 AND 65 KILOMETRES PER HOUR WITH MAXIMUM GUSTS EXCEEDING
96, 87 AND 79 KILOMETRES PER HOUR RESPECTIVELY.

1. COMPLETE ALL PRECAUTIONS IN YOUR HOME. LOCK ALL WINDOWS
AND DOORS, INSERT REINFORCED SHUTTERS AND GATES IF THEY ARE
AVAILABLE. ADHESIVE TAPE FIXED TO LARGE WINDOW-PANES IN
EXPOSED POSITIONS WILL REDUCE DAMAGE AND INJURY BY BROKEN
GLASS. DRAINS SHOULD BE CLEARED OF LEAVES AND RUBBISH AS
SOON AS POSSIBLE.
 
2. DO NOT STAND NEAR WINDOWS ON THE EXPOSED SIDE OF YOUR
HOME. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A SAFE PLACE TO SHELTER, SHOULD
WINDOWS BE BROKEN.
 
3. OWNERS OF NEON SIGNS SHOULD SWITCH OFF THE ELECTRICITY
SUPPLY TO THE SIGNS.
