TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN (SIGNAL NO. 8)
DISPATCHED BY HONG KONG OBSERVATORY AT 11:45 HKT ON 09.10.2021
TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN
HERE IS THE LATEST TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN ISSUED
BY THE HONG KONG OBSERVATORY.
THE NO. 8 SOUTHEAST GALE OR STORM SIGNAL IS IN FORCE.
THIS MEANS THAT WINDS WITH MEAN SPEEDS OF 63 KILOMETRES PER
HOUR OR MORE ARE EXPECTED FROM THE SOUTHEAST QUARTER.
AT NOON, TROPICAL STORM LIONROCK WAS CENTRED ABOUT 540
KILOMETRES WEST-SOUTHWEST OF HONG KONG (NEAR 19.6 DEGREES
NORTH 109.8 DEGREES EAST) AND IS FORECAST TO MOVE NORTHWEST
SLOWLY ACROSS HAINAN ISLAND AND INTO BEIBU WAN.
UNDER THE COMBINED EFFECT OF LIONROCK AND THE NORTHEAST
MONSOON, STRONG TO GALE FORCE WINDS PREVAIL OVER HONG KONG,
WITH OCCASIONAL STORM FORCE WINDS ON THE HIGH GROUND OVER
THE SOUTHWESTERN PART OF HONG KONG. IN THE LAST COUPLE OF
HOURS, THE LOCAL WINDS OFFSHORE AND ON HIGH GROUND
MODERATED SLIGHTLY, BUT THE OUTER RAINBANDS ASSOCIATED WITH
LIONROCK ARE EDGING CLOSER TO THE VICINITY OF THE PEARL
RIVER ESTUARY, BRINGING SQUALLS TO THE REGION. DEPENDING ON
THE WIND CONDITIONS, THE OBSERVATORY WILL CONSIDER ISSUING
THE STRONG WIND SIGNAL, NO. 3 TO REPLACE THE GALE OR STORM
SIGNAL, NO. 8 IN THE AFTERNOON.
STORM SURGE INDUCED BY LIONROCK AND HEAVY RAIN MAY LEAD TO
FLOODING IN LOW-LYING AREAS. MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC SHOULD
TAKE PRECAUTIONS AGAINST STRONG WINDS AND FLOODING.
BESIDES, SEAS WILL BE ROUGH WITH SWELLS. MEMBERS OF THE
PUBLIC SHOULD STAY AWAY FROM THE SHORELINE, AND NOT TO
ENGAGE IN WATER SPORTS.
IN THE PAST HOUR, THE MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS RECORDED AT
NGONG PING, CHEUNG CHAU AND TATE'S CAIRN WERE 98, 76 AND 69
KILOMETRES PER HOUR WITH MAXIMUM GUSTS 127, 91 AND 96
KILOMETRES PER HOUR RESPECTIVELY.
