TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN (SIGNAL NO. 8)

TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN

HERE IS THE LATEST TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN ISSUED
BY THE HONG KONG OBSERVATORY.

THE NO. 8 SOUTHEAST GALE OR STORM SIGNAL IS IN FORCE.

THIS MEANS THAT WINDS WITH MEAN SPEEDS OF 63 KILOMETRES PER
HOUR OR MORE ARE EXPECTED FROM THE SOUTHEAST QUARTER.

AT 10 A.M., TROPICAL STORM LIONROCK WAS CENTRED ABOUT 550
KILOMETRES SOUTHWEST OF HONG KONG (NEAR 19.5 DEGREES NORTH
109.8 DEGREES EAST) AND IS FORECAST TO MOVE NORTHWEST
SLOWLY ACROSS HAINAN ISLAND AND INTO BEIBU WAN.

LIONROCK'S CIRCULATION IS RATHER BROAD. UNDER ITS COMBINED
EFFECT WITH THE NORTHEAST MONSOON, STRONG TO GALE FORCE
WINDS PREVAIL OVER HONG KONG, WITH OCCASIONAL STORM FORCE
WINDS ON THE HIGH GROUND OVER THE SOUTHWESTERN PART OF HONG
KONG. THE GALE OR STORM SIGNAL, NO. 8 IS EXPECTED TO REMAIN
IN FORCE THIS MORNING. LOCAL WINDS ARE EXPECTED TO MODERATE
SLIGHTLY IN THE AFTERNOON. DEPENDING ON THE WIND
CONDITIONS, THE OBSERVATORY WILL CONSIDER ISSUING THE
STRONG WIND SIGNAL, NO. 3 TO REPLACE THE GALE OR STORM
SIGNAL, NO. 8 IN THE EARLY PART OF THE AFTERNOON.

STORM SURGE INDUCED BY LIONROCK AND HEAVY RAIN MAY LEAD TO
FLOODING IN LOW-LYING AREAS. MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC SHOULD
TAKE PRECAUTIONS AGAINST STRONG WINDS AND FLOODING.
BESIDES, LIONROCK WILL BRING SQUALLS. SEAS WILL BE ROUGH
WITH SWELLS. MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC SHOULD STAY AWAY FROM
THE SHORELINE, AND NOT TO ENGAGE IN WATER SPORTS.

IN THE PAST HOUR, THE MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS RECORDED AT
NGONG PING, TAP MUN AND CHEUNG CHAU WERE 94, 68 AND 65
KILOMETRES PER HOUR WITH MAXIMUM GUSTS 124, 80 AND 82
