TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN
 
HERE IS THE LATEST TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING BULLETIN ISSUED
BY THE HONG KONG OBSERVATORY.
 
THE NO. 8 NORTHWEST GALE OR STORM SIGNAL IS IN FORCE.
 
THIS MEANS THAT WINDS WITH MEAN SPEEDS OF 63 KILOMETRES PER
HOUR OR MORE ARE EXPECTED FROM THE NORTHWEST QUARTER.
 
AT 10 A.M., TROPICAL STORM ROKE WAS CENTRED ABOUT 30
KILOMETRES EAST-NORTHEAST OF HONG KONG OBSERVATORY (NEAR
22.4 DEGREES NORTH 114.4 DEGREES EAST) AND IS FORECAST TO
MOVE WEST OR WEST-NORTHWEST AT ABOUT 20 KILOMETRES PER HOUR
ACROSS THE PEARL RIVER ESTUARY.
 
ROKE WILL SOON MAKE LANDFALL OVER THE EASTERN PART OF HONG
KONG AND WILL TRACK FROM EAST TO WEST ACROSS OUR TERRITORY.
THE NORTHERLY WINDS IN HONG KONG WILL TURN RAPIDLY TO EAST
TO SOUTHEASTLIES. PLACES WHICH HAVE BEEN SHELTERED BEFORE
WILL BECOME MORE EXPOSED TO THE HIGH WINDS. MEMBERS OF THE
PUBLIC SHOULD STAY ON THE ALERT AND NOT TO RELAX
PRECAUTIONS.
 
THE GALE OR STORM SIGNAL NUMBER 8 IS EXPECTED TO REMAIN IN
FORCE FOR SOME TIME THIS AFTERNOON.
 
UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF THE CIRCULATION OF ROKE, THERE WILL
BE HEAVY SQUALLY SHOWERS IN THE VICINITY OF THE PEARL RIVER
ESTUARY. SEAS ARE ROUGH AND THERE ARE SWELLS. YOU ARE
ADVISED TO STAY AWAY FROM THE SHORELINE AND NOT TO ENGAGE
IN WATER SPORTS.
 
IN THE PAST HOUR, THE MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS RECORDED AT
TAP MUN WERE 44 KILOMETRES PER HOUR WITH MAXIMUM GUSTS 73
KILOMETRES PER HOUR.

1. COMPLETE ALL PRECAUTIONS IN YOUR HOME. LOCK ALL WINDOWS
AND DOORS, FIT BARS INTO POSITION AND INSERT REINFORCED
SHUTTERS AND GATES IF THEY ARE AVAILABLE. ADHESIVE TAPE
FIXED TO LARGE WINDOW-PANES IN EXPOSED POSITIONS WILL
REDUCE DAMAGE BY BROKEN GLASS. STORM WATER DRAINS SHOULD BE
CLEARED OF LEAVES AND RUBBISH.
 
2. PARK YOUR CAR WHERE IT IS LEAST LIKELY TO BE DAMAGED.
 
3. DO NOT STAND NEAR WINDOWS ON THE EXPOSED SIDE OF YOUR
HOME. MOVE ALL FURNITURE AND VALUABLES AWAY FROM THESE
AREAS. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A SAFE PLACE TO SHELTER, SHOULD
WINDOWS BE BROKEN.
