TROPICAL CYCLONE BULLETIN (SIGNAL NO. 1)

TROPICAL CYCLONE BULLETIN

HERE IS THE LATEST TROPICAL CYCLONE BULLETIN ISSUED BY THE
HONG KONG OBSERVATORY.

THE STANDBY SIGNAL, NO. 1 IS IN FORCE.

THIS MEANS THAT A TROPICAL CYCLONE NOW CENTRED WITHIN ABOUT
800 KILOMETRES OF HONG KONG MAY AFFECT US.

AT 5 A.M., TROPICAL STORM AERE WAS ESTIMATED TO BE ABOUT
270 KILOMETRES EAST-SOUTHEAST OF HONG KONG (NEAR 21.1
DEGREES NORTH 116.4 DEGREES EAST) AND IS FORECAST TO BE
SLOW-MOVING AND LINGER OVER THE NORTHERN PART OF THE SOUTH
CHINA SEA.

AERE HAS A RATHER SMALL CIRCULATION AND IS SLOW-MOVING.
UNLESS AERE RAPIDLY INTENSIFIES OR MOVES CLOSER TO HONG
KONG, THE CHANCE OF ISSUING STRONG WIND SIGNAL, NO.3 DURING
THE DAY TODAY IS NOT HIGH.

AS AERE IS EXPECTED TO LINGER AT A DISTANCE OVER 200
KILOMETRES FROM HONG KONG, THE STANDBY SIGNAL, NO. 1 MAY
REMAIN IN FORCE FOR SOME TIME.

UNDER THE COMBINED EFFECT OF AERE AND THE NORTHEAST
MONSOON, THERE WILL BE OCCASIONAL SHOWERS IN HONG KONG IN
THE NEXT FEW DAYS. WINDS AND WAVES WILL ALSO BE STRONGER
OVER OFFSHORE WATERS AND SEAS SOUTH OF HONG KONG.

(PRECAUTIONARY ANNOUNCEMENTS WITH NO. 1 SIGNAL)

1. SOME PRECAUTIONS AGAINST DAMAGE SHOULD BE TAKEN NOW,
GUTTERS AND DRAINS SHOULD BE CLEARED OF OBSTRUCTIONS.
HINGES, BOLTS, LOCKS AND SHUTTERS OF WINDOWS AND DOORS
SHOULD BE CHECKED.

2. THOSE WHO HAVE DEFINITE DUTIES DURING A TROPICAL CYCLONE
SHOULD NOW REMAIN ON CALL OR CONTACT THEIR CONTROL CENTRES
FROM TIME TO TIME.
