The Chief Executive, Mr Tung Chee Hwa, today (August 21) congratulated the Hong Kong table tennis team on winning the first silver medal for Hong Kong at the Athens Olympic Games.

In the men's doubles match, Hong Kong's Ko Lai-chak and Li Ching competed against top seeded pair Ma Lin and Chen Qi from the Mainland. The gold medal went to the Mainland duo.

Mr Tung said everyone in Hong Kong was proud of Ko and Li's marvellous performance.

"Their tenacity and strong will to succeed speak volumes for the Hong Kong spirit. The entire community will continue to give full support to our athletes. We wish them every success in the coming events," he said.

Extending his congratulations to the Hong Kong pair, the Secretary for Home Affairs, Dr Patrick Ho, said they would become role models for youths and help to promote a sustainable sporting culture.

Mr Tung also congratulated the national team on winning the gold medal. Top athletes from the Mainland who have won gold medals at the Athens Olympics will visit Hong Kong from September 6 to 8.
