New heliport opens in West Kowloon

A new heliport has opened at the southern tip of the West Kowloon Reclamation as part of the government's policy to facilitate the development of commercial helicopter services.

The West Kowloon Heliport has been made available as a temporary domestic facility for helicopter services following the closure of the Central Heliport. In the meantime, efforts will continue to identify suitable sites for the development of a permanent facility.

The Civil Aviation Department said today (December 7) that Helicopters Hong Kong Limited was awarded development and management rights for the West Kowloon Heliport through an open tender exercise conducted earlier in the year. Initially it will be available up to the end of 2005.

The new heliport occupies an area of almost 8,000 square metres and comprises one landing and take-off pad and three parking pads. It can accommodate both single and twin-engine helicopters up to a maximum take-off weight of 5.5 tonnes and an overall length or width of 16 metres.

At present, domestic helicopter services in Hong Kong are mainly provided by two commercial operators - Helicopters Hong Kong and Heliservices.

In 2002-03, a total of 7,264 domestic commercial helicopter movements carrying 20,818 passengers were recorded at the Central Heliport.

"It is believed the development of domestic helicopter services will enhance Hong Kong's role as a regional and international aviation centre. It will also help in promoting Hong Kong as a tourist destination, enriching visitors' travel experience and enhancing Hong Kong's attractiveness," the Civil Aviation Department said.
