Dick Lee appointed Hong Kong Police Commissioner

Hong Kong's new Commissioner of Police is Mr Dick Lee, the present Deputy Commissioner, who will take over the top job next Wednesday (December 10).

He will succeed Commissioner Tsang Yam-pui, who will go on pre-retirement leave after 37 years on the police force.
 
Mr Lee, 53, has more than 30 years of service in the force, serving in numerous posts and earning many accolades for his work.
 
Commenting on the appointment, the Chief Executive, Mr Tung Chee Hwa, said today (December 5) the new Commissioner had a thorough understanding of the work of the police.

"Over the years, Mr Lee has devoted himself to improving the efficiency and professionalism of the force. I am confident that he will effectively lead the police in meeting the challenges ahead," he said.
 
Mr Tung also praised the service of the outgoing Commissioner.
 
"Since taking up the appointment as Commissioner in 2001, Mr Tsang has demonstrated excellent foresight and remarkable leadership," Mr Tung said.

"Under his command, the force has continued to serve as a first-class professional team, which has effectively safeguarded the law and order of our community. We sincerely wish Mr Tsang a happy retirement."
 
The government also announced today the promotion of Mr Tang King-shing as the new Deputy Commissioner to succeed Mr Lee. Mr Tang, 49, is presently the Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police and holds the post of Director of Operations.
