Self-accreditation status for Institute of Education The Hong Kong Institute of Education (HKIEd) is to be granted self-accrediting status for its own teacher education programmes at degree-level and above. The Education and Manpower Bureau said today (March 24) the government's decision followed the recommendation of the University Grants Committee which conducted an Institutional Review of the Institute of Education. "The report of the institutional review has concluded that the Education Institute is strongly led in respect of quality and is ready to move to self-accreditation. It is academically desirable to allow a degree-awarding institution to be self-accrediting, provided that it is deemed to be capable of undertaking such responsibility," the Bureau said. The University Grants Committee also recommended that once self-accrediting status had been granted, the Hong Kong Institute of Education should continue its endeavour in quality. The Bureau said the Institute would remain subject to the normal periodic teaching and learning quality process reviews and other quality assurance measures undertaken by the UGC. This was the same process as other UGC-funded institutions. Ends/Wednesday, March 24, 2004
