To celebrate the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China and welcome the upcoming 50th anniversary of Ocean Park Hong Kong, the Auxiliary Medical Service Volunteer Team (AMSVT) today (November 7) organised the "AMS Volunteer Team × Heartwarming Tour for the Elderly at Ocean Park". The event brought together 50 elderly and 50 volunteers for a visit to Ocean Park, with a view to bringing care and warmth to the elderly through interaction and companionship.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Under Secretary for Health, Dr Cecilia Fan, remarked that the AMSVT has long been an important force in serving the community. She noted that its members devoted their spare time to participating in a wide range of community services. She thanked the AMS Cadet Corps members and volunteers for accompanying the elderly on a one-to-one basis throughout the visit to Ocean Park, fully demonstrating the AMSVT's spirit of caring for the community and mutual support.
Other officiating guests included the Chairman of the AMSVT and Deputy Chairman of the Board of the Ocean Park Corporation (OPC), Mr Simon Wong; the Acting Chief Staff Officer of AMS, Mr Chan Wai-kuen; the Chief Executive of OPC, Mr Ivan Wong; and the Service Director of the Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Welfare Council, Ms Poline Chan.
With the assistance of AMSVT members, members of the Auxiliary Medical Service Cadet Corps (AMSCC) and students of Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU), participants were guided by park staff to visit the "Giant Panda Adventure", where they took part in a panda-themed experience programme and observed giant pandas at close range. They also visited other attractions in the park and enjoyed a memorable day together.
This year marks the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, while next year marks the 50th anniversary of Ocean Park. On this meaningful occasion, the AMSVT hoped that the event would enable the elderly to revisit a place filled with fond memories and share their life stories and experiences with AMSVT members, AMSCC members and HKMU students, thereby fostering inter-generational exchange. The event also seeks to raise public awareness of the needs of the elderly and promote a caring and inclusive society.
