The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in London (London ETO) is supporting the Odyssey 2026 Film Festival, which will showcase 10 Hong Kong films in the United Kingdom (UK) from September 28 to October 10 (London time), alongside an opening screening and a series of industry engagement and promotional activities.

     The Director-General of the London ETO, Miss Fiona Chau, delivered a speech at the opening screening of the Hong Kong documentary "Because of You Ka Kui" in London on September 28, marking the official opening of the festival. Miss Chau said Hong Kong has long been a meeting point between East and West, between different cultures, languages and creative traditions. This unique character has helped shape a film industry renowned for its diversity and creativity, from world-class action choreography and distinctive visual storytelling to compelling contemporary stories. Today, Hong Kong filmmakers are also exploring new forms, new technologies and new international partnerships.

     In addition, Miss Chau added that promoting cultural exchange is an important part of the London ETO's mission, providing platforms for dialogue, understanding and collaboration between Hong Kong and the UK. 

     The development of Hong Kong's film industry is also supported under the First Five-Year Plan for Economic and Social Development of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (2026-2030) and the Chief Executive's 2026 Policy Address, which were recently published. Measures include attracting more private investment and facilitating Mainland and overseas film crews filming in Hong Kong.

     The opening film, "Because of You Ka Kui", tells the life story and legacy of the late Wong Ka Kui, lead singer of the iconic Hong Kong rock band Beyond, and received its UK premiere at the festival. Ahead of the opening screening, a reception was held, bringing together Hong Kong creative talents, including the director of the opening film, Rosa Pang, and the band's former guitarist, William Tang. More than 90 guests from the local cultural and business sectors also attended the reception.

     The Odyssey 2026 Film Festival is an annual event organised by UK-China Film Collab, a UK-based non-profit organisation. With "Fashion" as its theme, this year's festival will feature more than 40 films screened at cinemas and on online platforms, including the 10-feature-film Hong Kong programme. The festival will also feature panel discussions and audience engagement sessions, aiming to connect the Hong Kong and UK film industries.
